Art had been around prior to the Renaissance. The Renaissance is actually a throwback to ancient Greek and Roman art. During the time period of the Renaissance there was a renewed interest in excavating and preserving Roman art especially, which is why Italy is often considered the home of the Renaissance even though there were also similar things happening across Europe. They were also reading and transcribing ancient texts.
