Romanticism
Romanticism emerged as a major art form in the late 18th century and flourished throughout the 19th century, roughly from the 1770s to the 1850s. It arose as a reaction against the rationalism of the Enlightenment and the formal constraints of Neoclassicism, emphasizing emotion, nature, and individualism. Romanticism influenced various artistic disciplines, including literature, painting, music, and architecture, leaving a lasting impact on the cultural landscape.

The Romanticism art movement emerged in the late 18th century as a reaction against the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason and the Industrial Revolution's focus on mechanization and rationality. Artists sought to express intense emotions, individualism, and a connection to nature, emphasizing imagination and the sublime. Influenced by political upheavals, such as the French Revolution, and a growing interest in the past, folklore, and the natural world, Romanticism celebrated the human spirit and the complexities of life. This movement profoundly impacted literature, music, and visual arts, prioritizing emotional depth over classical ideals.
The art movement known as Romanticism began in 1770 and ended in 1840 in Western Europe and the US.
Realism in European art began after the Revolution of 1848. It turned away from Romanticism, which had been a leading artistic movement before then.
