Prague Castle was built around 850 AD by the Premyslid family.
The castles of Medieval times were often built with moats to protect the castle. Normal entrance was from a drawbridge controlled from within the fortress. Certainly surrounded by water added to a castle's dampness. Large castles had to have deep foundations to help support the weight of the stone built castle. Deep foundations tend to foster dampness. The moat not only added to surface humidity but they can create a water table in the earth below and near the castle as well. Stone retains dampness, thus many old castles had a high degree of humidity. Windows were few and small.( Glass was a limited production material.) This kept air from circulating, keeping dampness inside, and also prevented a more light filled interior. Thickness of the stone walls kept inside temps mostly the same year round, but it was always on the cool side. Keep in mind that castles were built as forms of protection, so they lacked many feature of regular homes, and had many features that kept them from being home like.
