Cristobal Balenciaga introduced the sack dress in 1957. It was a sharp contrast to the New Look silhouette of the early 50s, which emphasized a fitted bodice, narrow waist and full skirt. Givenchy and Dior were also early innovators with this look. The sack (or saque) dress was not so popular with the male population and it was a short lived trend, but evolved in the early 60s into the shift, and really took off when mini lengths and the Mod look hit it big.
