Most blade bolts on lawn mowers are reverse threaded. The bolts on the Craftsman brand lawn mower are also reversed.
Be sure that when you put the unit in reverse that the blades for the mower are not engaged. That will prevent the mower from operating

If your Craftsman riding mower dies when you start the blades or let off the brake, it could be due to a few reasons. A common issue is a faulty safety switch, which prevents the mower from operating under unsafe conditions. Additionally, it could indicate a problem with the battery or electrical system, such as a weak battery or loose connections. Lastly, an overloaded engine due to dull blades or excessive debris might cause the mower to stall when engaging the blades.
My Huskee mower will not mow in reverse due to a switch that kills the engine if the blades are engaged. This is very inconvenient. I removed the switch and it now mows in reverse. Do this at your own risk. I am the only person who uses my mower and it will be reinstituted when I sell the mower.
Looking at your blade from under the mower view. If it turns clockwise it will have reverse threads. If the blade rotates counter clockwise it will have the most common thread which tightens with your wrench in a clockwise direction.

check to be sure the blades have free movement. usually if you have this problem it is caused from something stopping the blades from rotating therefore it stops the engine
If you are saying that the mower shuts off when you engage the blades (or put the lever for the blades in the up position) then the most common problem is a bad seat safety switch. This is located under the seat. It has two wires going to it.
Depends entirely on which craftsman lawn mower you're referring to.
Usually there is a problem with the belts that drive the blades, after you stop the mower. Take a close look at the belts and assure that the belt is tracking and the pulleys are aligned. If you are unsure of the belt routing recheck the manual.
