AnswerTungsten may be very hard and scratch proof, but it is actually very brittle. Well, not brittle as in you can throw it against the floor and it will shatter, but it could chip.

So, a ring made out of tungsten carbide can be easily removed by cracking it into pieces with standard vice or vice-grip pliers. Standard ring cutters will not work.

To remove a tungsten carbide ring in an emergency situation, you can follow these simple steps:

  1. Clamp the vice-grip pliers loosely on the ring.
  2. Tighten slowly until you hear a crack.
  3. Remove vice-grip and place in another position on the ring.
  4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 until the material breaks away.

Take care not to slide or rotate the cracked ring on the finger. If the ring contains an inlay of gold, or other soft materials, the inlay can be cut or clipped away in the usual fashion.

What ring cannot be cut off?

There are a few types of rings that can not be cut off. Titanium and Tungsten Carbide are very difficult to cut off in an emergency situation.

What+is+the+difference+between+titanium+and+tungsten+tings%3F++I+currently+have+a+titanium+ring+that+I+like+a+lot%2C+it+is+lightweight+and+durable.++Are+tungsten+rings+nicer%3F?

Titanium as you know is a very lightweight metal, but also a metal that is highly prone to scratching. Tungsten (metal my wedding band is made of) is a substantially heavier metal that is almost impossible to cut once hardened, and will not scratch. Tungsten is in my opinion the best type of ring to go with, especially if you work with your hands. The only downfall to tungsten is that if you were to be in an accident or for some reason your finger swelled, it is almost impossible to cut off. However if it is your wedding band and you believe that marriage should be til death like I do then there should be no reason that the ring need to come off anyway. Hope this helps.

Is it true that tungsten carbide mens rings are dangerous because there is nothing strong enough to cut them off the finger in case of accident or emergency?

Added by Gmarmalard: Please see "Related Link" below for a video demonstrating the method used for removing tungsten carbide rings with a pair of "Vice Grip" pliers. There's no need for any special cutting equipment and certainly no amputation necessary! As tungsten does not bend, the pressure placed on the ring will cause it to crack or shatter. Because the "Vice Grip" pliers are adjusted slightly tighter in increments the pliers do not clamp down on the finger once the ring breaks. No, that is false. Tungsten carbide is quite strong, but it can be cut. Furthermore, the loss of a digit is hardly considered immediately life threatening. So even if one was to lose a finger as a result of an emergency in which a tungsten carbide ring could not be cut, the chances the person would die from such an injury are extremely remote. We cut tungsten carbide all day long at our company. It is cut with a silicon carbide blade or a diamond blade. One problem would be the intense heat generated during the cutting. The ring would have to be water cooled during cutting so as to not turn white hot. We use tungsten carbide at work all the time. It is hard, but can be easily broken. If you hit the ring on the side with a hammer it would crack into pieces. If you put a diamond ring on a anvil and hit it with a hammer it would shatter. Similar deal for carbide. Added by derekg0: Also I've heard of people shattering their tungsten carbide rings on rare occasions, so that might be another way to get it off. I don't have any experience with this, however, just anecdotal evidence

Is a tungsten ring dangerous?

Tungsten carbide rings are completely safe to wear. When manufactured well the metal is cobalt free and hypoallergenic. Tungsten is an extremely hard metal, one step below a diamond on the Moh's Hardness Scale. This makes the metal very unique. Many people worry about tungsten rings in the case of an emergency. One major concern they have is their finger swelling around the ring in the case of injury. Some are even deterred from purchasing tungsten rings due to this one major factor. Tungsten rings are actually safer to wear due to the hardness. The Hard metal ring will protect your finger rather than bend into it in the case of force. A true tungsten carbide ring can also be easily cracked off by any medical professional. A standard vice grip locked to the ring and cracked several times around the circumference will cause the ring to break into pieces. This is why most tungsten ring companies offer a lifetime warranty - these rings will easily be replaced for minimal to no fee.
