Both are hardwoods and once they are allowed to dry thoroughly all you need to do is apply one coat of primer like Kilz. That will be white and does not need to look like a finished coat. It simply seals the wood so that you can add the finish coat.

On the other hand, why would you want to paint either of these naturally beautiful woods?
