Firstly, a big enough stick is a weapon in and of itself. Refining the size and weight distribution can make it easier to wield where necessary, and enables a quicker, better-targeted strike. Using a longer stick as a polestaff achieves a similar result, albeit with more reach at the cost of slower striking ability, but with somewhat greater defensive use.

Next, sharpening such a staff creates a spear or stabbing weapon; these can be used in both ways, to club and to pierce. Returning to the original polestaff again, provided it is of the right construction, and adding a decent string, you can create a bow - arrows can be formed of several shorter sharp sticks and fletched if desired. Finally, get enough sticks and some rope, put together the right way, and you can create many quite formidable items such as catapults and ballistae.
