You'll probably be most comfortable using about a size 8 and a smooth worsted weight yarn in a light color. Avoid novelty yarns. Though they are pretty and can make spectacular effects, they make it difficult to see your stitches clearly. If you are by nature a very relaxed person, you might make that a 7, and if learning new things makes you tense up, try a 9 and when you cast on, cast on over both of the needles held together to make extra large starting stitches. Anxious knitters spiral down into a tight frustration because the harder it is to get the needle through the stitch the tighter they hold the yarn and the tighter the next stitch is. So the most important thing to remember when you start to knit is: Breathe. It's supposed to be fun. If it gets frustrating, put it down, do something else, and come back when you are fresh and relaxed.
