In old times Druids used to carve turnips and other vegetables of the like and place candles within them (hence the jack-o-lantern of today) to help guide the spirits home. They would also place fruits along roads to nourish the spirits on their journey. Also, because of the veil between our world and the next becomes very thin at this time, they used to dress in scary clothes to confuse negative spirits who could bring misfortune to a home. The actual holiday is Samhain (pronounced: SOW-in or SAH-vin), it's the druid new year, and between this time and the Winter Solstice is known as the dead time. A lot of the practices of the Druids, are still practiced today on Halloween.
