To adjust the shift rod on a 1980 50 HP Force outboard motor, first, ensure the engine is in neutral. Remove the access cover to the shift rod connection, then loosen the lock nut on the shift rod. Adjust the rod length as needed to achieve proper engagement of the gears, usually by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise. Finally, retighten the lock nut and test the shifting operation to ensure it engages smoothly.
shifting rod
There is a rod that runs from the clutch pedal mechanism to the clutch fork. On this rod there should be threads and a couple of nuts to adjust the length of the rod shorter or longer. Adjust as needed.
On the transmission where the shift rod connects. The rod should run through a block or bracket that has a bolt that tightens down on the rod. Loosen the bolt and the rod should slide in the bracket. When you have it in place, tighten the bolt back down. It could also be worn bushings where the rod changes direction. These can just be replaced.
Located on the carb look at your throttle linkage. Under the throttle linkage but on the same plate you will see another rod that runs down behind the engine. This rod also is used for your passing gear and runs down to the trans. You need to adjust the travel on this rod. If it is shifting late adjust it longer I belive. Try it and if not go the other way. Good Luck!!

One possibility is the shift rod in the steering column may have broke, that happened to my 93. The shift lever wouldn't move, that is what led me to believe it was the shift rod.
Absolutely Your shift rod is not seated properly. The shift rod is attached to your transmission at the rear wheel, right by the brake pads. There is an adjustment nut for the shift there. 1. Loosen the nut but do not remove it. 2. Manually put shift in Neutral. 3 Now tighten nut. 4. Shift should now be in proper alignment. 5. If this does not work, try again. You will see that by pulling in and out on the short shift stub coming out of the transmission, that this is what you need to adjust.
A copper rod will deform and flatten out when struck with a hammer due to its malleability. The force of the hammer will cause the copper atoms to shift and slide past each other, resulting in a change in shape.
To adjust the transmission on a 1973 VW Bus, first ensure the vehicle is on a level surface and the engine is off. Check the fluid level in the transmission; if low, add the appropriate type of transmission fluid. For shifting adjustments, you may need to adjust the coupling at the shift rod or the shift linkage to ensure proper engagement of gears. If you're experiencing specific shifting issues, inspecting the shift linkage for wear and proper alignment is also advisable.
from the top of gear case housing at mounting bolts hole measure the shift rod at 21.5 inches to center of hole in shift rod,in neutral gear.
