How do you calculate asphalt paving tonage?

L x W x thickness(convert inches to ft) = Cubic Feet(CF)

Then ... CF x density (approx 145# per cf) / 2000 = tons

Say you want a driveway 10' x 100' that will be 4 inches thick

Multiply 10 x 100 x .33(4/12) = 330 CF

Then 330 x 145 / 2000(ton=2000#) = 23.93 tons of Hot-Mix asphalt

Shorthand 145# per CF = 12.08# per sq in. | 4 inches x 12.08 = 48.32

thus 10 x 100 x 48.32 / 2000 = 24.16.

Even though there are decimal differences in these two examples they are more than acceptable for driveway asphalt estimates.

While asphalt density will vary some depending on the mix design and the aggregate used, a good rule of thumb is that it will take about 110# to cover a square yard one inch thick. Measure the sq ft and divide by 9 to get the area. Multiply this by 110 to get the pounds of asphalt needed, then divide by 2000 to convert it to tons required for a 1" thickness. Multiply by the thickness required to get the total tonnage required for the job.
