i too have a 73 super beetle and i needed a new fuel pump also. the way i did it was to simply take off and plug the fuel lines with a pencil or something and pay attention to where the hoses were on the pump. then remove the two bolts and pull the fuel pump out. pay close attention to the gaskets. i believe that there should be one between the pump and the plastic block then one between the block and engine case. pull out the rod that is in the engine case and inspect it for damage. replace if necessary now smother the rod with grease and put it back in. put the new gaskets and pump in, don't jam anything. replace the two bolts and put the fuel line back on.
