Hello - I've recently been looking into this myself as one of my side light bulbs has gone on my VW Polo gti.
Below are some really useful links for changing the sidelight bulbs on my model, I'm not sure if they will be exactly the same for other types of polos.

Hopefully they'll be of help to someone though.
The first step is to open the car's bonnet the loosen the bolts holding the sidelight. You can then remove the light cover and remove the bulb. Changing takes the reverse.

To remove a sidelight on a VW Transporter, first, ensure the vehicle is turned off and the keys are removed. Use a flathead screwdriver or trim removal tool to gently pry off the sidelight's plastic cover, starting at one corner to avoid damage. Once the cover is off, disconnect the bulb socket by twisting it counterclockwise and pulling it out. If you're replacing the bulb, swap it out and reassemble the sidelight by reversing the steps.
