If my memory is correct, everything can be changed from under the hood. The heater box should be on the passenger side by the firewall. Remove all of the screws that hold the top of the box on. Be very careful when removing the top of the box. The sealant is insanely strong and you can crack the box, if you pry or pull too hard. Once the top it off it should be right there. Disconnect the heater hoses and lift the heater core up and out. Make sure to check the new heater core for leaks before installing it. This is easy, cork both tubes off and dunk it in a bucket of water. If you see bubbles, take it back because it is leaking. When reassembling the heater air box make sure you apply a liberal amount of sealant. This will prevent leaks.

To change the heater core in a 1984 Cutlass Supreme with air conditioning, first, disconnect the battery and drain the coolant from the radiator. Remove the dashboard and the HVAC assembly, which involves taking out various panels and components to access the heater core. Once exposed, disconnect the hoses and remove the old heater core, then install the new one, reassemble the HVAC system, and finally reconnect everything, ensuring to refill the coolant before testing the system.
