Swing the handle up to vertical and pull it forward free of the can opener body. You can immerse this part in water. It goes back on the same way. Hold it vertical and place the post into the hole on the opener body. Rotate the handle down to lock it in place..Use soap and water to remove built up food residue on the cutter wheel. You can remove the screw holding the cutter wheel and spring and better clean the parts. Makes sure the cutter wheel rotates on the shaft. You can use a bit of petroleum jelly on the shaft to help it rotate. Clean the gear on the body with a stiff brush.
