Crude oil is refined and then used basically

1. For burning in transport and to produce electricity
2. To make plastics and other useful resources.

We can conserve oil by only using it for making plastics etc. We must stop burning it. There are many other sources of renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro, tidal and wave, geothermal and biofuel) that we can use instead.
