How do you convert mills into milligrams?

Grains to Grams: Divide the number of grains by 15, then divide that number by the number of grams on hand.

EX: Aspirin grain 10 PO is ordered. Strength on hand is 0.3 gram Tablet. 10/15= .6666 then .6666/0.3= 2.222 .........Answer is 2 Tablets.

Grains to Milligrams: Divide the number of grains by 15, then mutiply by the number of mg on hand.

EX: Physician ordered Coumadin gr 6 po. On hand Coumadin 5 mg/tablet. So 6/15=0.4 take 0.04 mutiply by 5mg=2.....................Answersis 2 Tablets.

One thing that is helpful with Grains is to make a Conversion Clock. 60mg(60mins) = 1grain(1hour), EX: 1/4 grain=15 mg; 1/2 grain= 30 mg; 3/4 grain= 45 mg. If you draw the clock, it helps for visual learners.

For Example #1, the answer is correct. I used ratio & proportion when solving these problems. It is much easier and can keep track of the units.

For Example #2, the answer is wrong. Here how I solved the problem:

1. Know that 1 grain = 60mg - 65mg (I usually use 60mg).

2. Ratio & Proportion: 1gr/60mg = 6gr/x. Now cross multiply. Solve for x

3. You'll end up with x = 360mg (390mg if you use 1gr/65mg).

4. Ratio & Proportion: 360mg/x = 5mg/tab. Now cross multiply. Solve for x

5. x = 72 tabs ( x = 78 tabs if you use 1gr=65mg).

A mil is 1/1000 of a 'something.' It can be a gram, liter, meter, or other SI unit. A milligram is 1/1000 of a gram, so in essence they are the same measurement.
