This is for Photoshop cs5. It may work with other versions but i am not sure. So beside channel (on the same line as layers) click path and down to the bottom (where create new layer should be) click on the create new path icon. Select your pen tool and draw a path around the desired object. After that, go back to layer and click on add a new layer mask to the layer that you create a path on, then the undesired background will 'disappear'. Hope this helps!
