When I am asked to describe my whole programming experience in an interview, I tend to mention my previous personal projects and internships as I am a 2022 graduate and don't have meaningful job experience. I also try to remain short as well as crisp with my answers. Because long answers create a dull environment in an interview. What I usually do is that I explain that I have the correct balance of showing my broad range of knowledge without appearing to be a perfectionist. In my opinion, by programming experience in an interview, the interviewer means how we have applied all the said skills in a real-life situation. Telling all this includes the time I have been coding and doing software engineering work. First, I list the programming languages and applications in which I am proficient. I think that people who are responsible for my hiring will understand this answer of mine. I always include languages like c++ and java as I know that a company's oldest database is built only by using these languages. I also try to include the applications like GitHub, which is very much asked in the interviews. I include all the IDEs I have worked on. I try to be specific with my answers. My programming experience includes: Describing my programming experience, which eventually becomes my most significant strength because it always gives me a chance to show the interviewer what is great about me. When I describe my programming experience, I make sure to be specific, give examples, and showcase the work results. Highlighting all that I have done is essential in grabbing that job role. Before an interview, I used to identify my favorite programming language. Also, I use the STAR method to showcase my programming experience. I always explain a Situation, Task, Action, and Results where I used programming experience.
First, I mention the situation, then the task of the problem I faced, like hackathons or college competitions. Then I discuss the action to improve the case or build some software and finally tell the results. This method has helped me a lot in the interviews in catching my interviewer's attention and interest. Earlier it was very daunting to discuss my programming skills as I did not have many projects or internship experience. For the experience part, I also used to answer the question on Stack Overflow. I use to participate in online coding challenges to increase my ranking on coding platforms and showcase them in my resume and interview. I used to create new projects also and mention those in my interviews.
And for better answers, I used to jot down all the points so I don't forget to mention the important ones under pressure or any interview anxiety. I won't recommend you learn the answers, but I will say you must remember what to mention while giving this answer.
