For those who don't know, French polishing is a technique, not a material. You start with flake shellac 10% by weight, dessolve in denatured alcohol. Once your finish is ready, use a lint free pad and apply a very wet coat....let stand for 5 min. apply 3 or 4 more coats resting the 5 min. in between. When it becomes lumpy & sticky let it rest another 5 to 10 min. Now put 1 or 2 drops of either lemon or walnut oil on your project and smear around with your finger, (this is for lubrication). Now is the time when French Polishing starts, this is "VERY" lobor intensive, now you rub & rub adding a drop of oil to keep from sticking from time to time, (try not to use to much oil, or it will become part of the finish, you want to keep it at a minimum). the trick is to watch the vapor trail of the alcohol, no vapor trail your removing the finish, keep a small vapor trail when your applying, keep RUBBING until you have a mirror finish. NOTE: you can get the same kind of finish with modern products & equipment (spray-guns) and spend less time with a LOT-LESS work. French Polishing is a very old technique. Good-Luck with all your work
