The easiest way to render braids in a drawing is to establish the hair (colour, and texture), complete with the part and then using alternate arcs rough out the braid itself.

To do this, draw "(" shapes one above another, then on the other side make a reverse ")" shape that starts & ends at the middle of the the shapes on the other side. This will give you the woven or braided look you are trying to achieve.

Now fill in the braid with curved lives in the colour and texture you have established for the hair, make some sort of binding for the end of the braid and add a "brush tip" of loose hair below the binding.
