A pager is a device which was commonly used by businessmen before cellular phones became common. They were small electronic devices which were often clipped to the belt. If the owner was wanted, the pager's phone number could be called. Once connected, the remote party could enter a short message (usually, only numbers were accepted), and this short string would be delivered through the then-young cell network.
