Happened on mine, get a long thin screwdriver and fiddle about until you can push down on the spring that releases the catch at the same time as pulling down on the lid. You can just about see the spring. If the spring has been displaced, you can be a bit more aggressive with the screwdriver and it will open - it doesn't matter if you break something, its bust already. Once open, take out the mechanism via the three star drive screws and go down your local scrappy. Sorted.

There was a 15A fuse just behind the glove compartment on mine. Gently lever the 2 tops small bits out, the pull the 2 cylinders at the bottom. Be careful not to pull the dampener at LHS off (heard someone snapped one before). The fuse diagram is on the LHS of the glove compartment. Good luck Bill

To replace the glove box handle on a VW Beetle, first, open the glove box and remove any contents. Then, locate the screws or clips securing the handle to the glove box door and remove them. Once the old handle is detached, position the new handle in place and secure it with the screws or clips. Finally, test the handle to ensure it operates smoothly before closing the glove box.
Remove the glove compartment and the fuse will be located behind it. A diagram of the fuse layout is stuck to the left side of the glove compartment.
