Emeralds are naturally occurring gemstones, and are a Beryllium and Aluminium Silicate. Much of the green colour is due to a Chromium content.

Natural emeralds commonly have inclusions or contaminants, so seldom is a good transparent crystal found.

Man-made emeralds may be created, and these are usually as perfect a crystal as desired. They are the same material as the natural ones, but are not as well regarded by the jewellery trade.
