It depends, but the most common method in the U.S. is a button on the left side of the gun. You push it, and the magazine comes out. However, not all pistols work that way. Some have a lever on the bottom of the grip. This is call a European release (at least it's called that in the U.S.) and some have a lever on the bottom of the trigger guard.
