How do you remove the stock stereo to replace it on a 2002 Wrangler?

hi, the four little holes in the front of the stereo are for 2 special tools. they are cheap (i think) and most shops have them around. it only takes 2 minutes to remove with the tools, so it shouldn't cost much to have a shop do it if you dont want to buy the tools. hope that helps

you can get the u shaped tools at Walmart for about 7 bucks in the car stereo section wamong the installation kits.

I'll add you insert the two tools until you feel the first click. Then push each tool outwards towards the sides of the stereo which releases the catches. While doing that then pull straight out. The tools are readily available anywhere they sell stereos.

Removal/Install Stereo for WranglerTo remove the stock stereo, start with removing the vent bar at the top of your dash. It uses pressure clips to hold itself in, and is the only thing you will not need tools to remove. Once that is removed, it will expose 2 Philips screws, remove these and save, once those are removed, you can pull off the dash panel. I usually disconnect the top part of the panel, and then I open the glove box to help me grip the bottom part of the dash.

You have to be careful removing it, as too hard can damage it. Once removed, ensure all 4 metal pressure clips are removed and reinstalled on the dash panel. If some remain attached to the dash by the radio, I take a small flat head screwdriver and push in the center part of the clip, while using a needle nose plier to grip and pull out the clip. It can then be reinstalled on the panel.

Once this is completed, you can remove the mounting hardware for the radio, and start tracking other components to the anti-theft bar beind the radio. That will usually consist of removing most of the dash, vents, to give you access to the back of the head unit. Once this is done, you can disconnect the anti-theft bar and remove the stereo.

Installation is the opposite of removal.

Make sure you use that anti-theft bar! they do help!

Make sure you check your wiring before you try to plug in another head unit. Get any adapters and hardware you need BEFORE you drive home from the A/V store and rip apart your truck.

There are clips on both sides of the stereo that you need to depress to pull the stereo out. You can access these without taking off the dash cover. On the driver's side you can reach up under the plastic moulding and feel the side of the stero. The clip is at the front. On the passenger side I removed the glove compartment (about 8 screws) to get at the clips. In my Miata's owners manual it showed me step by step on how to get mine out. YOu may want to try there, if you haven't already. :)

Remove the retaining cover from your 2003 Suzuki stock stereo. Remove the stereo retaining screws. Slide the stereo out and remove the wiring harness and the antenna cable from the back of the stereo.
