For a longer lasting repair and totally water proof use outdoor UV rated "helicopter Tape" or as its now known as 'surface guard tape".
Make sure you get the UV rated type. I used 3" wide UV rated helicopter tape to repair a severe open crack on a dual dome skylight. The tape kept the water out for almost a year until I finally got around to replacing the dome.
If you doubt the strength of this type of tape , the name comes from the fact it is used to protect the leading edge of helicopter blades from nicks and scratches. Now this tape is used on race cars etc.
The window in a ceiling or roof is called a Skylight.
To install a skylight in a room, first choose the location on the roof where you want to place it. Cut a hole in the roof and frame it with a curb. Install the skylight flashing kit around the curb to prevent leaks. Place the skylight on top of the curb and secure it in place. Finally, seal around the edges with roofing cement to ensure it is watertight.
A 'Skylight' and a'Roof Truss' are 2totally different parts of a building. A roof truss is a timber or steel framework used to carry the roof cladding. A skylight is a panel in a roof which contains a panel of clear plastic or glass which allows the sunlight to shine into the room of the building.
To repair and replace a leaky skylight, follow these steps: Inspect the Skylight: Check for cracks, gaps, or sealant issues around the frame. Reapply Sealant: If the sealant is worn or cracked, carefully remove the old one and apply a fresh, waterproof sealant around the skylight edges. Replace Flashing: If the leak is caused by damaged flashing, remove and replace it to ensure a proper seal. Skylight Replacement: For severe damage, you may need to replace the skylight entirely. Measure the skylight dimensions, remove the old unit, and install the new one, ensuring a snug fit and waterproofing. If you're not comfortable handling this yourself, it's best to consult a professional. The Sydney Roof Doctor specializes in skylight repairs and replacements, providing expert service to fix leaks efficiently and prevent future issues.

If you are talking about a small tool shed; then measure distance between the exposed 2x4 roof supports, find a skylight that will fit (the non-opening type are less expensive.) Find matching roof shingles (you won't need many), determine the flashing you intend to use, use your skylight as a template and draw the necessary cutout on the inside of the location. Drill whole from the bottom up through the roof shingles. Locate those holes and cut out the necessary opening, now use the skylight "footprint" to remove necessary shingles, find full shingles to remove. Mount the skylight and flash as per instructions, caulk where needed. Affix the new shingles. Test if necessary.
Install the sill flashing first, according to the manufacturer's instructions. As a rule, flashings are nailed into the curb and sometimes cemented to the roof with plastic roof cement, but not nailed to the roof.
You put it on the roof of the house making it a small window... Kind of thing With consideration to the answer above, i will elaborate slightly. You can place a skylight in any section of the house providing that there is clear access from the roof to the ceiling for the shafting/ light tunnel to take ample affect. For example you must take into consideration the ridge capping of the roof and also the valley, as the flashing must be placed in a near position to where the skylight shaft and bottom roof opening wishes to be placed, for best light into the room
