I just replaced both license plate light bulbs on my 1998 VW Jetta. I had to remove two Phillips head screws retaining the lens cover to expose the bulb. I then had to carefully use a pair of slip joint pliers, (housing access is too small to get your fingers in there), and grab the bulb with sandpaper to prevent slipping and then carefully without too much pressure to break the bulb, work it back and forth until it slips out of the friction fit socket. It is not a quarter turn socket. The all glass bulb merely slips in between a pair of spring steel tines to retain the bulb. It is fairly tough to get out. If necessary, you can remove the entire bulb housing, pry off the elbow socket fitting and pull the wire connecting tangs off the back side and then push the bulb out from the back if it breaks. Mine did not break but they were really in there and I could not remove them with my fingers alone.
its very easy open the hood and remove the carpet from the light there will be 2 bolts the whole light unit will come out and then replace the bulb .
Check the fuses. You'll probably need to replace the 20 amp fuse.
You have to get a new brake light switch!
You can reset the brake warning lights, on your VW Jetta, by backing up 20 feet and using the brakes. The automobile will sense the new pads and the warning light will go off.
See sources and related links below for the brake lamp and light bulb list information.

To change the brake light bulb on a VW Golf MK4, first, open the rear hatch and locate the tail light assembly. Remove the screws or clips holding the tail light in place, then gently pull the assembly out. Twist the bulb holder counterclockwise to release it, replace the old bulb with a new one, and reassemble the tail light by reversing the steps. Ensure the new bulb works before closing the hatch.
Check the bulbs, fuse & brake light switch on the pedal.
try your brake light swtich on the brake pedal and check wires

i replaced a brake light bulb in my 2001 golf now none ofthe brake lights are working ! i can not tell which fuse is the one for the brake lights ! please help ?
From the inside of the hatch area uncover the light fixtures. The lamp carrier is held in place by plastic clips. Depress the clips to remove the lamp carrier. Replace the lamps as required and replace the carrier in the fixture. Check your work.
