Studying fashion design is a perfect foundation for making your dream of owning your own label a reality. However, not everyone can afford this. There are ways and means to overcome this obstacle. First, you'd have to learn how to sew. A second hand machine and overlocker will do. Getting into the "knitty" gritty (excuse the pun) of garment design, perfecting the art of stitching, and developing an accurate flair for pattern making would be key. Baby steps. Go to part-time classes - a well known sewing machine distributor could give sound advice on where to start. Read ALOT - allow books on fashion and sewing to consume you. Start off with samples. Experiment with different materials, and most important of all, focus on what you want your image to be - trendy? Classic? Comfy and Casual for the everyday woman? Figure out a brand name that will represent your image. Start off small, and slowly introduce what you have to offer to clothing stores. You will probably get turned down a lot, but persistance is key. If you have quality garments (NEVER compromise on quality, I tell you!) you WILL get a response. It will probably take years to form a stable business in the production and distribution of your creations, but advertising your image through as many different mediums as you can will enhance your chance of success -be prepared to spend money. (you've got to spend money to make money, even if this means taking out a big fat loan!) Copyright your name as your business grows (which will cost you) and take it from there. You've basically got to spend a nauseating amount of money before even thinking of becoming a millionaire. If all this fails, try figure out Victoria's Secret - hell, she sure got it right!
