Remove the butt plate. There is a hold in the stock under the butt plate. The stock bolt can be seen at the bottom of the hole. Obtain or make a screwdriver (or socket, if it is a hex nut) to fit the bolt slot. Be very careful to not let the screwdriver slip out of the slot when you are unscrewing the bolt or else you can go right through the side of the stock and ruin it.

What is the current value of a Steven's Savage Arms Corporation, Chicofee Falls, Mass, USA, 12 gauge single shot 21a Model 1078?
Yes, you can shoot steel shot in a Savage Model 311 double-barrel 20 gauge, but it is important to ensure that the shotgun is in good condition and that the choke constrictions are suitable for steel shot. Many older shotguns, including the Savage 311, were not specifically designed for steel shot, so using it may increase the risk of damage. It's advisable to consult the manufacturer's guidelines or a knowledgeable gunsmith for specific recommendations regarding your shotgun.
