The Samurai used several types of iron war fan. The two types which could serve as weapons were.

  • Tessen were fans made with blades of heavy plates of iron which were designed to look like normal folding fans. They were concealed weapons. They could be used as offensive weapons (Closed as clubs open as cutting edges), shields against arrows and darts or even to aid in swimming.
  • Gunbai or Gunpai were solid open fans of iron or metal with wooden core. They were used as shields against arrows, as a parasol, or as a signal to aides or troops to troops.

Like most weapons of this mature it is hard to look inconspicuous with a large lethal fan in most modern surroundings and hard to get iron weapons past sensors.

Replicas may be purchased or made up by local armouries.
