There are a few different types of earphones.

The generic type of earphones (earbuds) sit in your ear, just outside of the ear canal (they come with most music players), are simple. They sit sideways in your ear and its like a mini speaker point into the side of your head.

Another type of earbuds are essentially the same, but have a plastic/rubber arm that goes around your ear, like glasses.

The last type are called canalphones, these act much like earplugs do. These have a rubber (and sometimes foam) sleeve that sits on the outside of the speaker. You actually push these in your ear and the sleeve provides noise isolation. Which prevents outside noise from getting in your ear while keeping your music, your music. You see all news reporters/anchors wearing one of these in an ear.
