Giving a 2-week notice of your intention to quit a job/employer must be in writing. You need to use a business letter format. Put your address on the top right line and directly under that, your city, State and Zip Code. Move back to the left margin. Skip 2 lines. Now, write the name of your boss as "ATT: Mr. Michael Lastname." (without the quotes). On the next 3 to 4 lines write 1. the name of your company, 2. the street address (same as the location where you work) 3. the city, State, Zip Code. Skip 2 lines. Address it Dear (your boss's name) with a comma after the last name. Skip 2 lines and indent the paragraph to begin the "body" of the letter.

In the body, begin by saying, "I am writing to give you a 2 week notice. (Pick a date for your last day) My last day will be on (month, day, year). (Note: Many people end jobs on a Friday so they can begin a new job or schooling the next Monday.) (Begin new paragraph.

In the second paragraph you can express thanks for what you learned or the opportunity to work for X-company. For example.... "I have appreciated the many opportunities that working for Company ABC has given to me. I have learned valuable skills which will serve me well as I continue my career." Some people don't want to thank their almost-ex-employer. But an employee should never burn bridges; you should not use the letter to rant or express anger. You never know, maybe in 5 years your ex-boss will become your new boss at a different company!

Then, simply end the letter with Sincerely (comma) or Sincerely yours (comma). Skip about 4 lines, and type your name. In the 4-line blank area you will sign your name.

Note: You do not need to give any reason for leaving a job. You do not need to tell where you are planning to be hired or to work next. You do need to make sure that Human Resources has a correct mailing address so they can mail you your final paycheck.
