My Singer 3343c works with disks. The disks need to have the stitch width (zig zag width as it were) changed from zero to some width. When the stitch width is 0 all the disks are a straight stitch.

For stitching clothing, the best stitching is a straight stitch on a sewing machine (2.5 or 3.0 length). If you're sewing by hand, a straight stitch at a very short length may work, depending on how thick or sturdy the fabric is.

What does the stitch width dial do on a sewing machine?

You should have an instruction booklet with your machine. That will show you where everything is. You use it to select the width of the stitch you want to use in a zig zag stitch.
