Wash lines are still used by many people who do not have dryers, taking advantage of the outside air and sunshine to leave your clothing dry and fresh smelling. You hang the clothing from the line with clothes pins (I prefer the ones you pinch to open) on to the line. Socks are hung by the toe, underwear by the elastic (not stretched), woven shirts by the side seams, t-shirts with the hem over lapping the line. This keeps the wrinkles caused by the clothespins to a minimum. Sheets are put on the line with a 1/3 to 1/2 overlap so that they don't slide off. Towels can be hung by the corners. A trick to use fewer clothes pins is to overlap the corners and use one pin between two objects. Towels and sheets may be somewhat stiffer than they come out of the dryer, but loosen up with use. Some think that the fresh smell of the sheets is the best thing on earth.

You do not need to have sunshine to use the wash line. Clothing will dry as long as it is not raining. Sunshine may cause fading, so you should turn clothing inside out and remove it from the wash line as soon as it is dry. Washing left on the line through a few cycles of rain and drying may mold.
