Cotton comes from a plant. The plants are harvested, and the product is transported by truck to factories for processing.
Farmers typically transported their cotton using wagons or trucks to cotton gins for processing. Once processed, they would sell their cotton to buyers such as textile mills or trading companies. Some farmers may also have utilized brokers or cooperatives to help with marketing and selling their cotton.
Cotton bolls are transported by first being compacted into modules with a machine called a module builder. A module is kind of like a bale of cotton, except it weighs 10,000 to 20,000 pounds. Once the module is built, it is loaded onto a flatbed truck and hauled to the cotton gin. (An update: Since I wrote that, John Deere and IH Case have introduced new cotton pickers that have onboard module builders. The minimodules so produced are round and weigh 5000 pounds. A fully equipped John Deere 7760 cotton picker is nearly $900,000 and you only need it two weeks a year, so many of the guys who have these are contract cotton harvest operators. They like the machine because it dramatically cuts down on the number of workers needed.) After the bolls are processed into cotton lint, it is compressed into "standard density bales." These can be transported in regular dry vans or railroad boxcars. When the cotton is spun into yarn, woven into cloth and made into finished goods, it can be transported like any other dry freight is transported.
Passengers, grain, livestock, coal, cotton, wool, the list goes on and on. In the time of the steam engine anything from that era would have been transported.
how does mercury get transported
Table salt is transported in bags; salt for industry is transported by trucks.
The cotton is picked with a cotton picker machine and put into big cotton trailers. After the field is picked (it takes 3-4 runs through the field to get all the cotton off the bolls) the trailers are hooked up to trucks and the raw cotton is taken to the gin. At the gin the trailers are put under a big vacuum that sucks up the raw, dirty cotton. The cotton is cleaned, seeds removed, and stems, leaves taken out. It is then packed into big bales and stacked up.
