Qiviut Garments can be dry cleaned or hand washed. if you choose to have it dry cleaned be sure to tell the cleaner that it should be cleaned using the silk setting.
To hand wash, fill sink with a small amount of warm water and delicate detergent, submerge and leave to sit in the water for 20 minutes. Next, drain water and press out the water......DO NOT WRING THE GARMENT. Refill the silk with clean water at the same temperature as the wash water (very important to prevent felting). Again, press out water and lay flat to dry...reshape garment gently as it dries.

Qiviut is grown under the long guard hair coat of the musk ox. The musk ox shed this fine coat of underwool every spring, and grows a new coat in time for the next winter.
Yes, a spinner and weaver can use muskox fleece, specifically qiviut, which is the fine undercoat of the muskox. Qiviut is highly prized for its softness, warmth, and lightweight properties, making it an excellent material for spinning and weaving into luxurious textiles. Qiviut wool comes from the undercoat of the muskox, a large mammal native to the Arctic regions of North America and Greenland. The fiber is incredibly soft, lightweight, and warm, making it highly sought after for luxury garments. Unlike sheep's wool, qiviut does not have lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic and suitable for sensitive skin. The fibers are collected during the molting season when the muskox naturally sheds its undercoat.
There should be no difference what so ever. Qiviut (pronounced KIV-EE-UTE) in the Yupik Eskimo language, means down or under wool. It refers to the winter coat of the Musk Ox. It covers their entire body closest to their skin in the fall and they shed it naturally every spring. Most of the qiviut in the world will come out Canada or Greenland, from culling the wild heards. Although you can get it from a couple of places in Alaska. I work for Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers Co-operative. Its a co-op of knitters that hand knit garments made from qiviut yarn.
The undercoat of a musk ox is called "qiviut." It is a soft and warm fiber that is prized for its insulating properties and is significantly finer than sheep's wool. Qiviut is shed by the musk ox in the spring and is collected for use in high-quality textiles.
