While very tough, vinyl does rip and tear from time to time. Fortunately, it is a man-made material and can be easily repaired. In order to repair the vinyl there are two items that you should have. The first is a vinyl adhesive. This is sold at hardware and craft stores. The second item to have is a scrap piece of the vinyl that you are trying to repair. If you don’t have an extra piece, you will want to find a piece that is the same or very similar in color and texture at a hardware, craft or fabric store. First, take the vinyl patch and cut it to be about one-half to one inch larger than the tear you are trying to repair. Take the cut piece and place it inside of the tear so that the finished side is facing up. Try and center it underneath of the tear and try not to rip the vinyl any more than it already is. Now take the vinyl adhesive and apply it liberally to the bottom of the flap that is the tear and to the top of the vinyl patch you have inserted. Also carefully apply the adhesive to the edges of the tear. Press the vinyl flap down and make sure it is flat. It should be adhering to the patch you inserted underneath. Make sure to wipe away any excess adhesive that may have gotten on the vinyl. Once it is very flat, allow the adhesive to dry for at least twenty-four hours. This will allow it to cure. Make sure not to touch the area in any way before then. Depending on the type of vinyl and whether there is a grain or not, you may need to purchase a repair kit that has other finishing options. Specifically, there are heat-activated finishes and textured pads that can help to add extra shine, fill in small gaps, and match the pattern of the vinyl. Repairing torn vinyl is not a difficult task, but it is important to be meticulous and thorough when performing the repair.
