THEN add one half inch for EACH seam in your pattern per side. (this allows each fabric in a given seam to have a quarter inch seam allowance. adjust for your own seam allowance, some people use 1/8th inch seams)

So, the basic answer for a 39x75in bed, is 1 1/6th yard (1yd+6in) x 2 1/12 (2yd+3in)

(PS, using fat quarters is a great way to get the yardage for your pattern and have a good mix of colors. They are often sold in five peice sets giving you five quarters of a yard each. If you bought two sets, you would have 1/2yd each of 3 colors.)
