Balsa wood is very light, and very strong for its weight. It is widely used in model airplanes.

Balsa wood had its moment of glory during World War II. Aluminium was in short supply in Britain, which caused difficulties to aircraft manufacturers. De Havilland Aircraft got around this by making a sandwich - half an inch of balsa between two thinsheets of plywood. The material was then used to build a wooden 'plane, glued together. This airplane, christened the Mosquito, was met with derision until it was realised that it could fly both higher and faster than any German fighter of the period.
