Is it gramatically correct to say the content and delivery was excellent or the content and delivery were excellent?

were _________________ I too favor the plural form in this example, but it is not always very clear which is best. It can get very awkward, especially for speakers who find themselves hemmed in by the way they have verbally expressed something. The person might hem and haw before deciding which direction to take. It may depend on context, and on the conventional use of some terms. For example I would say 'salt and pepper are both on my shopping list', but it would be outrageous to say 'Rhythm and Blues' are my favorite musical genre.
