Your question was:

"Should I use satin or semi gloss on a ceiling?"

ANSWER:

Satin for sure, semi gloss doesn't look good on ceilings, in my opinion.

What the different between satin and semi gloss?

Satin is lower gloss than semi-gloss paint. Paint finishes in order of decreasing gloss are: * Gloss * Semi-gloss * Satin/Low sheen * Flat Some manufacturers call Satin/Low sheen finish Eggshell, and others regard this as a finish between Satin/Low sheen and Flat paint. The higher the gloss finish the easier it is to clean, the higher its durabillity and the more it shows surface imperfections.

What is the best type of paint for crown moulding Flat Semi-Gloss Satin etc?

Generally, a satin or semi-gloss sheen is best for decorative trim. The shinier paint will be a bit easier to apply, be smoother after application and will accent the crown molding. I always paint crown, doors, door trim, and baseboards in high gloss. Here in the south we also use only one color, white. I also use ceiling paint as the primer coat because I paint it (the crown moulding) when I paint the ceiling. Then I apply 1 coat of high gloss on the crown. Then I paint the last coat that has been thinned a little with water (2 tablespoons per cup of paint) This goes on very fast and smoothe and when finished looks like wet vanilla ice cream. When you paint high gloss, be advised that you have to keep a wet leading edge, meaning that if you stop painting and the paint is allowed to dry, it will show where you stopped and then restarted. The same is true for semi gloss and satin.

Should you use semi gloss or satin for baseboards?

Semi-gloss paint is often recommended for baseboards due to its durability and ease of cleaning, making it ideal for high-traffic areas that may require frequent maintenance. Satin can also be used, offering a softer finish that can help hide imperfections, but it may not withstand scuffs and stains as well as semi-gloss. Ultimately, the choice depends on the look you want and the level of durability needed. For a polished and resilient finish, semi-gloss is usually the better option.
