To soften leather work gloves, you can apply a leather conditioner or mink oil, which helps moisturize and break down the stiff fibers. Gently massage the product into the leather, focusing on high-stress areas. Another method is to wear the gloves while performing tasks, as the natural oils from your hands will also help soften the material over time. Always test any product on a small, inconspicuous area first to ensure it doesn't alter the color or texture.

The best gloves i have used so far for general welding was probably the miller HD leather mig/stick gloves. The have a nice liner inside and full contoured leather on the outside. They are comfortable and pretty tough, but if your fitting up steel or moving stuff and using them like normal work gloves in a shop they will only last a few weeks(just like every other pair of gloves). If he does some welding at home or just welds at work( no fit up or anything, just lays beads) they would be about the best pair you can get.
