The principles of design are universal. As design applies to beading, there are certain considerations. Beading is essential design in several applications; as accents to a woven design, as a free standing design of itself, or as a woven design OF beads. When beads are used as accent, the color considerations which the bead accents are primary. In this case the bead is not the focal point but rather the locus for the focal point. In most cases, the beads add sparkle and shine to the focal point. It is therefore essential that the color selection and size of the bead does not overpower the focal point itself. Beaded dresses are a prime example of this principle. When the beadwork is freestanding, such as sculpted pieces, all design elements are in play. The various sizes of the beads, the joining methods such as glue wire or string, and the colors all have function within the piece. It is important to understand the color wheel so that the piece has form and interest. Further, the type of bead will either enhance or detract from the finished work because of the way the light hits the piece. Most work that is less than satisfactory is because of the use of too many colors or shapes. As in most artwork, it is important to choose the elements well and value simplicity. As a woven work, the elements of design will be most traditional and most obvious. Since the beads are very tiny, they can be viewed more as a picture than as sculpture. This work is the easiest to apply the traditional elements to because it is usually chartwork. Since one has charts to refer to, the project can be refined and contemplated before the work is commenced. While the stitching or looming is fascinating in itself, the design elements do not vary as much as in freestanding projects. In all beadwork, the principles of shape and color, balance and texture, and media are almost always considered before starting a piece. The most successful pieces are works of art worthy to be considered in the same field as sculpture.
