D refers to denier which is a measure of the density of the fibers used in cloth. More specifically 1D means that 9km of the cloth fiber weighs 1 gram, 40D means that 9km of cloth fiber weighs 40grams.

The smaller the denier the more yards of fabric are produced per pound of cloth fiber resulting in thinner cloth with a finer weave. (small D = longer fiber per pound).

It can be a bit confusing. I hope that helps.
