Stippling is a technique used to fill in large background areas of a quilt. It is a meandering line of very curvy stitching, where the lines never cross each other. I suppose you could do it in hand quilting, but I've only seen it used in free-motion machine quilting. It takes practice to make the curves smooth and to not quilt yourself into a corner!
The phrase 'tout en quilt' means everything in [the proper manner and style of a] quilt, all quilted. In the word-by-word translation, the noun 'tout' means 'all'. The preposition 'en' means 'in'. And the noun 'quilt' has the same meaning in French as in English.
This will all depend upon what the quilt is made of. When making a quilt, you can add more padding to it if you wish.

Quilts can be any size. There are 5 millimeter quilts and the names project quilt is about 300 meters. My wife has a quilt in this project. There are quilts for baby beds, single beds, etc. A typical quilt is probably between about 2.3 and 2.5 meters.
I generally try not to use both cotton and polyester in the same quilt. The main reason is that the different fibers tend to react differently to washing/drying and wear. Over time you can end up with a quilt that is distorted in shape and size. That being said, using a polyester or blend in for the back and cottons for the top is not as troublesome as mixing the fabrics within a pieced top. You will experience fewer problems with distortion if the poly is only on the back. If the quilt is ornamental and won't be washed much you may be okay using the poly backing. If the quilt will be used a great deal then stick with all cotton.
Ecru is a color, so if someone has an ecru quilt, it just means it is all ( or mostly ) one color. Ecru is off white in color.
The finished block size of a quilt is the size of the block after it is stitched into the quilt. The block size has to include the seam allowances on all four sides. In other words, a 12 1/2 inch block will become a 12 inch finished block.
"Step to the Alter" is the name of a quilt pattern. The spelling is "altar," meaning the table at the front of a church. So a "Step to the Altar" quilt would be made as a wedding quilt for a new bride and groom. In Barbara Brackman's Encyclopedia of Pieced Quilt Patterns, there are 4 different blocks called "Steps to the Altar." They are all complex pieced blocks (constructed of geometric pieces of cloth stitched together) in which the pieces represent stair steps leading to the church altar where the wedding vows are said.
To make a knot a quilt, you will first have to cut out your quilt squares. To do this make a template. Your template should have evenly spaced slashes all around the square. Use the template to cut out your fabric squares, include the slashes. You simply tie knots by attaching one quilt square to the next by knotting the cut pieces of fabric to one another.
