What is iris-messaging?

In the kid's series Percy Jackson, by Rick Riordan, the demigods were able to do something called "iris messaging". They needed a fountain of water that used light to create a rainbow (Because Iris is the goddess of the rainbow) and they offered her a golden drachma. Then they were able to ask to see something, and it would appear in the mist. ~Hope this helps! ;D
