A soft wood simply means that it is not a hardwood. Hardwoods are deciduos trees while soft woods are trees such as evergreens. This is unique in that not all hardwoods are truly hard wood. Balsa wood is classified as a hardwood, but it is one of the softest and lightest woods in the world (many childrens toy planes are made from balsa wood because it is so light). Again, not all deciduos trees make a hard wood, but all are classified as hardwoods.
