Typically, glass fuses have a low breaking capacity, while ceramic ones have a high breaking capacity. This is to help protect the surrounding circuits from molten material. And maybe the technician.

Can you use a glass fuse in place of a ceramic fuse assuming it's of the same current rating?

Yes as long as they are the same rating & for the purpose of overcurrent protection (short circuit, overload, device failure)... But ceramic fuse are also called "thermal fuse" which are commonly used in some applications (appliances) with heating element as "overheat protection"... In my own honest opinion, replacing the thermal fuse with a glass fuse would be quite risky... Put a little discretion in such action or better yet ask opinions of someone who are adept & experienced in such situation...

Why are ceramic fuses used in microwave ovens?

Because, if the fuse blows due to an interlock switch failure, it ruptures so hard that a regular glass fuse would shatter, possibly scattering shards of glass into the cooking area, which would create a health hazard.

An open fuse has a resistance of?

Zero. There is no resistance on an open fuse because there is no connection between the terminals on the fuse. I beg to differ There is INFINITE resistance in a BLOWN fuse... There is ZERO resistance in a GOOD fuse.

How can you tell if a ceramic fuse is blown?

Test it with an ohm meter.

How do you know if a ceramic fuse is blown?

Put a continuity check on it. This can be done with an ohm meter. If there is no reading then the fuse is open.

Difference between MDA and MDL fuse?

A = ceramic, rated at 250V (all values) L = glass, rated at 250V up to 8 amperes(?), but 32V for 9 amperes and above. NOTE: The voltage rating is important! http://www.cooperbussmann.com/pdf/2bd5c594-ca46-48ff-8b97-ab4af4af0569.pdf
